Listening to this while mulling over the passing of Nora Ephron. Granted, i don’t know the gal from Eve, but i’ve been an avid fan of her work ever since. When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle are on my top 5 movies, timeless and memorable in their humor and witty dialogue, not to mention some very memorable scenes (that fake-orgasm scene at the diner still draws laughter even after all this time).
Nora spins a story that you can totally relate to, create characters you can root for and identify with, and still have humor injected into a scene without making it cartoony. Rom-Com movies they may be, her stories are appealing to both sexes and their conversations are real, if not memorable. I think i’ve memorized the lines to Sleepless in Seattle and WHMS at one point in my life, i’ve watched those movies so many times!
Inserted into these conversations are nuggets of dialogue that may have voiced many an emotion, like this one from Sleepless: ”Destiny is something we’ve invented because we can’t stand the fact that everything that happens is accidental.” Whether you agree or not, it pretty much said something about our time, and i think Nora most effectively spoke a voice for it through her writing.
RIP Nora Ephron.
